knee injury

Knee injury is a common sports medicine problem. Sports knee injuries have various symptoms, depending on the cause of the problem:

  • knee swelling and knee stiffness
  • knee redness and elevated knee joint heat
  • knee instability and/or weakness
  • crunching or popping noises as the knee moves or bears load
  • knee locking - being unable to fully straighten the knee

While some sporting knee injuries are not serious and will respond quickly to RICE treatment, proper medical attention is important to rule out (or treat) serious damage. You should see a doctor, and ask for a sports medicine specialist referral if pain last more than a few hours, or any of the following apply:

  • You can't bear weight on your knee
  • Your knee has noticeable swelling
  • You are unable to fully straighten or bend your knee
  • You see any obvious deformity in your knee or leg
  • You have a high temperature as well as knee swelling and redness
  • Your knee "gives out"
